A Team Bow Out Valiantly

The A team have achieved something quite special this year - taking the Club to the semi finals of the Optimus Plate. Downs have not always fared well in this competition but a determined squad were keen to make a big impression this year.

The team, led by Ian Moon traveled to Copthorne on Saturday for their Optimus Plate semi-final against Sedlescombe. The match takes place with foursomes match play in the morning and singles match play in the afternoon, all off scratch.

After the morning foursomes the Downs were down 21/2 - 11/2 with the pairings of Seb Dell & Ben Dawson securing a win and Will Fairbairn & Shaun Harrison halving their match. The singles were always going to be a tough challenge against a very strong Sedlescombe team which included the current County Champion.

Early wins for Ben Dawson and Shaun Harrison gave some hope of a shock result; particularly with Phil Manser and Will Fairburn holding their opponents and being all square through 16 holes. Unfortunately both lost their matches on the 18th green and any lingering hopes of making the final were extinguished with Seb Dell, Mark Lester, Nigel Smith & Ian Moon also going down to leave the final score 81/2 - 31/2 to Sedlescombe.

Eastbourne Downs are proud of the teams achievements - the boys have done us proud. Well done to all the players that have been involved this year
