Downs Edge Close Encounter

Eastbourne Downs men travelled to Mid Sussex for their Optimus Plate 2nd round match. In what proved to be a very close encounter The Downs got off to a great start in the morning foursomes with Callum Dell and Ian Moon winning the first match 4 & 3, followed by Seb Dell and Ben Dawson winning 1 up and then Shaun Harrison and Will Fairbairn winning by the same margin. Phil Manser and Nigel Smith went to the 18th hole but lost 1 down. At 3-1 up the Downs were in a strong position only needing 3 more points for a shock away win. Early wins for Shaun Harrison and Ben Dawson in the singles left it looking good but then five losses meant that it was all down to anchor man Nigel Smith who birdied the 16th for a 3 & 2 win and tied the match 6 points apiece.  With the away team going through in a drawn match it is the Downs who find themselves in the quarter finals with a home tie against Seaford.

Meanwhile, back at the Downs 68 men turned out in ideal conditions for the qualifying round of the Sussex County Golf Union Claret Jug. On a day of low scoring Scott Simpson (65) secured first place in Division 1 ahead of Mark Lester (67) and David Graham (68). Peter Ring (70) led the field in Division 2 from Alan Bennett (71) and David Field (72). Top in Division 3 was Keith Woodrow (66) from Mark Van Wyk (67) and Robert Claydon (69). With the lowest nett score Scott Simpson will represent the Downs at the County Finals later in the year.

The Seniors also enjoyed good conditions for their delayed June Medal when a field of 62 turned out. Barry Rust (67) took the honours in Division 1 ahead of David Button, Tony Warren and Derek Springall who all shot 68 and were separated by countback. Best in Division 2 was Malcolm Little (67) from Roy Grainger (69) and Peter Lawrence (71).

The Ladies contested the Way Cup over 2 rounds with Captain Nicky Reeves (151) lifting the trophy and Val McManus (161) runner up. The Ladies July medal was won by Lorraine Heywood (72) with Anne Knight (74) taking second place on countback from Val McManus (74).

Irene Hitchcock and Paul Staples travelled to Cowdray Park for the 1st round of the How Did I Do Mixed Pairs Knock Out where they won a close match (1Up) against the pair who won the national title 3 years ago. They will be away to a Holtye pairing in the next round.
