Golfing Round Up

Following the good scoring of the previous week Eastbourne Downs golfers were presented with much more challenging conditions over the last 10 days.

Only 2 players could better par in the Seniors May Medal. Peter Hardy returned an excellent 2 under par 70 to pip Trevor Harrison (71) to first place in Division 1 with Harold Knight (74) taking 3rd place on countback from Derek Springall & Brian Powell. Division 2 honours went to Martin Greenhalgh (72) with Malcolm Little (73) second and John Baldwin (74) taking third spot on countback from Alan Broughton.

Ladies Golf

The ladies team of Nicky Reeves, Irene Hitchcock, Gill Olivier, Liz Street, Teresa Archer & Caroline Abbott successfully battled high winds as well as their opponents, Cottesmore, to secure a 2 – 1 victory in the Sussex County Golf Union Morris Fours inter club knock out. They will play East Sussex National in the next round.

The ladies again had to contend with gale force winds for their Spring Meeting on Sunday but battled through valiantly although the scoring reflected the very difficult conditions. Nicky Reeves (98) took the scratch award in the Silver Division with Sarah Harlowe (84) taking the handicap award ahead of Gill Olivier (87). The scratch award in the Bronze Division went to Lorraine Heywood (110). Julie Crane (80) won the handicap prize from Liz Street (87).

Cyril Blake Success

In somewhat easier conditions on Monday the mens’ Cyril Blake team had a convincing 4 – 0 victory over Cuckfield to progress to the third round when they will be away to East Sussex National.
