Home Players Top in Borough Trophy

With fine weather and the course in excellent condition 44 pairs turned out for the 36 hole Borough Trophy on Sunday. A better ball v par competition this is Eastbourne Downs main open event of the year. WIth the course set up to be a fair challenge for our major event,  first round scoring was very good with players settling down for the afternoon conditions where scoring (for some) became a little bit easier .

Downs pairings occupied the top 3 places. Joe Angella & Guy Grimley returned an exceptionally good +13 to lift the trophy; a major turnaround for Joe who had only managed to record 26 points at Willingdon the previous Monday in the triangular Past Captains’ event. Brothers Seb & Callum Dell took second place on +11 (any other year a winning score) with father & son Barry & George Wooller third on +7.

Prizes for the best morning and afternoon rounds outside the top three went to Paul Staples & visitor, Kyle Holford (Willingdon) on +4 and Steve Redfern & visitor, Roger Myall (Royal Eastbourne) on +5.

Mixed Golf

On Saturday the Downs ladies entertained the men’s section in the annual Wilkie Tankard Greensomes. Despite testing conditions, including a torrential downpour, there was a very close contest with countback required to separate the top three pairs who finished on 34 points. Sue & Graham Mills came 1st, Donna Myles & Terry Wills 2nd and Teresa Archer & Roger Geering 3rd. Following the golf an excellent meal was served by Paula and her catering team.

Seniors Golf

Previously the Seniors enjoyed good weather for the Lewis- Canon in which the top 4 players in each division progress to a knock out competition. Division 1 qualifiers were Brian Powell (68), Kevin Hardy (72), David Bell (74) & Tony Lewis (74) and Division 2 Alan Broughton (76), Dave Inch (77), Malcolm Little (78) & John Debley (79).
