Mike Haverley - hole in one king

The golfing gods continued to provide fair weather for the Eastbourne Downs golfers for another busy week.

A large field turned out for a shotgun start on Chris Broughton’s Seniors Captain’s day to compete for individual and team prizes. Individual honours went to Barry Rust with a very good 40 points closely followed by Ross Jay (39), Chris Palmer (39), Jack O’Hara (39), Lou Angella (38) & Kevin Hardy (38) in that order with countback determining the final positions. The team prize, for the best 3 scores from 4, was an equally close contest with Tony Warren, Jack O’Hara, Martin Greenhalgh & Dave Inch coming out on top with 112 pts ahead of Ross Jay, Dave Button, Roger Hobbs, & Roger Porthouse (111) with Kevin Hardy, Brian Goodbody, Lou Angella & John Baldwin (110) taking 3rd spot on countback. Closest to the pin prizes went to Colin Whiteman (6th in 2), David Bell (8th), Bob Brett (12th) and, most notably, Mike Haverley with a hole-in-one (14th). The day concluded with a superb lunch served by Paula Collins and her team.

The men played a scratch medal in 4 Divisions. Top place in Division 1 went to club champion Shaun Harrison (79) with Ray Crane (80) second & Will Fairbairn (81) third. Ian Pagan (80) was best in Division 2 followed by Bill Plumstead (84) with Tony Warren (86) securing 3rd spot. Division 3 was headed by Stefan Ashford (84) with Lyndon Stonard (92) second and Martin Sines (94) third. Best in Division 4 was Phillip Bell (94) ahead of Clifford Sandys (100) and Jeffrey Wilding (108).
