Flitch Success for the Downs
17/07/2011
The Flitch is an annual competition between the married couples of Eastbourne. The competition is hosted between The Royal, Willingdon and Eastbourne Downs with this years host Royal Eastbourne. The Downs host in 2012.
With a few brief and sharp showers in blustery conditions the couples made their way around the course but thankful to miss the heavy rains of the previous day.
Downs Captain Ray Crane and his wife Julie Crane were surprised to see themselves as eventual winners on the day with 37 points (foursomes) with second place Mr & Mrs Bob Salmon 35pts (Royal) and third Mrs & Mrs Barry Alford 34 pts(Wilingdon).
The trophy was originally presented by the Downs Tom Wilcox in 1966 and is a fantastic idea for all the Eastbourne Clubs to enjoy. The trophy was last won by a Downs member in 1999 by Mrs & Mrs CD Thomas.
Graham & Sue Mills won the best front nine prize with 17 points and Gordon & Judith Milne won a drawn prize.
Congratulations to all those who took part in this years event and special thanks to the hosts Royal Eastbourne Golf Club and the Club Captain Ken McDonald and his wife and Lady Captain Yvonne McDonald

Club Championship 2011
10/07/2011
The weekends 36 hole club championship saw the players taking part in difficult conditions on Saturday with high winds setting up a challenge for all players with only two players Phil Manser and Nigel Smith breaking 80!
Those that struggled found themselves needing to make up ground on Manser who held a 1 shot lead overnight on Smith. Playing in reverse order of merit on day 2 throughout the divisions, the leaders vied for position with improved calm conditions holding for most of the day.
Fittingly the Championship went down to the wire as Manser held a slim 1 shot lead going down the 18th. Manser though found himself out of position from the tee shot whilst Smith found the green in regulation albeit with a lenght first putt the length of the green.
A play off seemed inevitable as the fancied Manser was a safe bet for a bogey at worst. Amazingly Manser sent his first putt long by 5ft and faced a nervy putt down hill which he sadly missed, holing out for a double bogey. In response Smith slotted home his 6ft putt to secure a par and finish the day on a gross 74 and become the 2011 Club Champion.
A great weekends golf and a good test for all involved.

Longest Day
20/06/2011
Club Captain Ray Crane took on the longest day challenge to raise funds for his Captains Charity on Monday. Playing 72 holes in a day, Ray wanted to raise funds for his chosen charity the Reynauds & Scleroderma Association.
Starting out at 5am conditions were not great, with low cloud obscuring the vision to 100 yards and drizzle in the air, the morning got off to a damps start. Good progress was made though with his playing partners Ian Pagan and Dave Whatley. Taking just 2 hous 45 for the first round.
A quick turnaround saw Ray take on round 2 in slightly better conditions completing in just 2 hours 3 minutes the full 18 holes, good support from Barry Rust who carried for Ray kept the pace up.
After a short pit stop at Lunch time and a visit from Eastbourne Mayor Carolyn Heaps round 3 got underway with Vice Captain John Boniface for the back nine. This time the course was slightly fuller but all groups stepped aside to make way (and duck!!) completing round 3 in 2 hours 30.
A slice of cake and Round 4, ray was joined by Ian Pagan, John Boniface and Seb Dell making up the greens staff contingent. The cloud descended once more making conditions difficult again but perserverance and less club the group negotiaited the course in great spirits.
Only 2 balls lost in the fog, Ray's scoring was the best given the conditions and speed of play but the challenge was completed.
Thank you to all of you that supported and sponsored the event and those that played with Ray on the day. Thanks also to Ann & David Reffold for their support throughout the day, Generously Donating food to Ray and his groups and ferrying coffee and bacon rolls to all parts of the course. A great sight on the 11th as Ben and Ann appeared through a shrouf of fog with coffees in hand!
Thanks to all involved - time to put the feet up!
Ladies Club Championship
19/06/2011
The showers stayed away but the breeze persisted to make difficlut conditions for the Ladies for their 2011 Club Championship.
The main championship was played over 36 holes and well contested between the Clubs popular Nicky Reeves and Jenny Hughes. After 36 holes nothing seperated them resulting in the need for a playoff. Both players returning a gross 172. Nicky Reeves eventually claimed the Championship after the two hole playoff. Incredibly this pair contested the 2010 championship with Jenny Hughes claiming the prize after yet another playoff.
The Handicap prize played over 18 holes was won by in form Gill Olivier who carded a score of 149 nett.
Longest Day Challenge
14/06/2011
On Monday 20th June Club Captain Ray Crane will be playing four rounds of golf (72 holes) in a day to raise funds for his charity.
As a reminder, The Captains charity funds raised this year will be directed towards the Reynauds & Scleroderma Association (RSA) and essential course works needed this year. You can find out more about the RSA at www.reynauds.org.uk and on the Captains noticeboard.
If you feel like joining him on one of the rounds (or all) then please enter your name on the noticeboard. (all times approximate).
More importantly however, the whole point is to raise funds for our club and the RSA. Ray is asking members to make a small sponsorship for the event. Any pledge is appreciated. Please enter the amount on the noticeboard. (If you can get any sponsorship from friends and family that would be great)
There’s a TOTE for the day, based on the number of Ray's shots over the 72 holes and the combined 4 balls for the day. If you’d like to enter, the list is behind the bar.
At the end of the day, there will be a small BBQ or similar with feet up on comfy cushions. ALL members are welcome to join in.
