Whatley at the Double!

Eastbourne Downs golfers have had another busy week in fine weather with several knockout finals played as well as other competitions.

Dave Whatley scored a notable double on the same day. First up he and Ashley Richardson played exceptionally well to lift the Evills Foursomes with a 6 & 5 victory over Ray Crane & Warren Poll who had little luck ; always seeming to find impossible lies when straying off the fairway. Whatley then partnered Caroline Abbott to a closely fought 1 up victory in the mixed pairs final against Liz Street & Phil Hanson. Other knockout final results were:

Kevin Elphick KO: Will Fairbairn beat Kevin Elphick 6 & 5;

Gildredge Manor: Ian Pagan beat Rod Pullen 5 & 4;

Morrison Cup: Alan Bennett beat John Boniface 2 up;

St Cyprians: Dave Graham beat Ben Dawson 2 up;

Seniors Pairs: Paul Shing & Lou Angella beat Dave Kemp &                                           John Hardy 1 up;

Seniors Singles: Dave Hunter beat Kevin Hardy 1 up;

Lewis Canon: Dave Inch beat Alan Broughton 1 up;

Henry Winder: Martin Greenhalgh beat Dave Kemp 3 & 2.

The Downs Juniors played their Championship over 2 rounds and faced a stiff challenge with brisk easterly winds. Sam Smith carded scores of 89 & 92 to lift the trophy ahead of 2nd placed Jake Nash.  Run alongside the second round was the Joe Lee Stableford for juniors with handicaps 29 – 54 in which Daniel Thom stuck to the task to come out on top with 33 pts.

The ladies contested the Sykes Cup & Ladies Golf Union Breakthrough Brooch in glorious sunny, though breezy, conditions with Liz Street on nett 72 running out a clear winner from Teresa Archer (78).

The Seniors played for the Hymns stableford trophy which was very closely fought. Terry Marsh took the trophy with 35 points on countback from Ross Jay (35). Malcolm Little came third on countback from John Baldwin, Dave Kemp, John Debley & Alan Broughton all having scored 34.

The men competed in a medal round for the Davis Gilbert Trophy & Stanley Ellis Bowl. In Division 1 Joe Angella shot the lowest gross of 74 for a nett 66 to lift the Davis Gilbert ahead of Ray Crane (71) and Kevin Hardy (72). Ben Ward with 71 topped Division 2 to take the Stanley Ellis Bowl ahead of John Boniface, Mark Cresswell & Paul Sorrell all of whom shot 74 and were separated by countback.
